An area which is enclosed for players to carry out their baseball or softball batting practice is termed as a batting cage or tunnel. Netting is the most favorable material used for making these batting cages. These cages usually appear in a rectangle shape. A fence linked with chains is usually not required, but can help avoid vandalism by enclosing the netting. But it is important to understand why this particular material should not be used as the first layer of the netting as it can possibly damage the fence as well as the balls hitting it.
Lines of steel cable are typically utilized to suspend batting cages constructed indoors. Each line is six to eight feet high. The most important element is the ‘anchor points’ which are joined to the wall using a plate of steel. The absence of powerful anchors will lead to the sagging of netting.
Sections of steel poles or stands are used to install batting cages for the outdoors. These are placed twelve to twenty feet away from each other. More distance between the supporting stands means more sagging. This obviously makes the cage less useful.
Netting: Basics and use
With regards to quality and lasting abilities, netting can come in numerous variations. For instance, different netting will suit different league players, for example, for High School baseball teams, #36 Gauge is suitable and #60 works well for professional players and for commercial use.
When a cage is used in a baseball game, a batter takes his position at one end. A machine for pitching the balls, or at times another player stands at the other end. The baseballs are pitched to the batter by this machine or player and he hits them. An L screen is often used to stop the balls from hitting the pitching player or the machine.
The baseballs required for pitching are kept in the cage around the vicinity so that they are within reach. As mentioned earlier, these batting cages can be built both outdoors and indoors.
Points to remember
When purchasing a netting, it is important to remember that it is usually available for sale in twine sizes. A smaller number means a thinner twine. Therefore a #24 gauge will obviously be double the thickness and strength of a #12 twine. The netting material is mostly made of nylon, polyester or polyethylene.
